It sounds somewhat cliché or akin to an excerpt from a low-budget horoscope, but I’m content on proactively and deliberately declaring this as a statement of fact over my day.

Today will be great

These simple, yet powerful, six words face me from a sign posted over my desk, on a plain white background with bold black letters. It’s a blatant representation of intent.

I enjoy visual encouragement, particularly in the form of words, so I have a number of affirmations surrounding me throughout my day.

This one is elementary. Easily realized in high pressure, high intensity moments when stress, uncertainty, and chaos arises.

The sign serves two purposes: 1) to remind myself of what I’ve come into agreement with regarding my day and 2) to make others conscious of my decision.

When I say, “Today will be a great day,” I’m essentially insisting that the condition of my day bend to fit my ambition.

If you share my beliefs, you know that “the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” – Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)

Words kill, words give life.

My gauge of the day directly corresponds to an internal validation turned verbal. It’s not that mayhem and foolishness won’t find me, it’s that I choose how I will internalize and respond to external provocations beyond my control.

“God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;

and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Reinhold Niebuhr

The quality, not the circumstances, of my day is determined by me. The quality of your day is determined by you.

What happens when you refuse to give a child or someone you’re in conflict with identical energy in the midst of his or her tantrum? What happens when you use healthy communication skills in an effort to diffuse the conflict?

You set the tone.

Pulse check. Raise your hand if you are bold and fearless with purpose?

If your hand is confidently or even partially raised, I submit that OPPOSITION IS LOOKING FOR YOU.

But be encouraged, you co-create your destiny in concert with your Creator and resistance only serves to build muscle. Woman of power, you need muscle where you’re going! Muscle size sufficient to contend at the next level.

Helpful hint: If your language frequently consists of, negative outcome + he/she/him/her/that/it, it’s an indication that your day has taken dominion over you.

words have power

Here are three, simple ways to bend the condition of your day:

1) Bear the fruit of a healthy tongue, steeped in truth.
2) Take it day-by-day. Don’t get ahead of yourself.
3) Be proactive, not reactive, and deliberate.

Do you have any pre-day affirmations that you could share with others?
